Meet MJ Dachtera

1. What inspired you to start volunteering with Magnificent Mutts?

I love volunteering with Magnificent Mutts because they are willing to help all types of animals from dogs, cats, rabbits and hamsters etc. Plus they try their best to help animals from around the world. We all need to do what we can.

2
. Describe a memorable moment you have while volunteering.

Over the years we’ve fostered a couple hospice dogs and extreme neglect or special needs dogs. We are attracted to the ones most in need. Seeing them thrive and come out of their shells is so rewarding.

3. Are you a cat or dog person?

Definitely a dog person. We’ve always had at least 1 cat. I’ve even been told I have the personality of a German Shepard. Very loyal and protective. But don’t hurt someone I care about or me. Grrrrrrrrr!!

4. Why would you recommend someone adopt?

Save a life. So many animals need good homes. I don’t see any reason why an educated, compassionate person would buy from a pet store or breeder. If you love a specific breed, even a puppy, a great one will come around soon enough. Just fill out and application and give it a little time.

5. What kind of work or hobbies do you do outside of rescue?

I own Anything But Snakes, Inc. I started my pet sitting business in 1994. We service Elmhurst, Oak Brook and the nearby suburbs. I have the best job ever. I also love gardening and landscaping.

6. Do you have a favorite vacation spot or favorite vacation memory?

Our favorite vacations are ones we can take all our dogs. We call it “The Family Road Trip”. We’ve stayed with friends and rented many houses. It’s a little tricky finding a house to rent with 3 or more dogs, but they out there. We’ve also researched fenced in dog parks on our travels for everyone to stretch their legs.

7. Feel free to tell us something about yourself you would like others to know.

I’ve been married to Mark for 37 years. I could not do what I do without him. Don’t ever settle for someone that doesn’t have the same interests as you and supports you. There are great partners out there. Be patient.
