March 2021 Volunteer of the Month

Meet Katie Gilbert

1. What inspired you to start volunteering with Magnificent Mutts & Meows?

Linda Latelle- who else than the founder herself? I grew up best friends with her youngest son. From preschool until now, I was always surrounded by such beautiful animals and caring people of the Rescue. It wasn’t a thought in my head to foster, it was just something you do. I don’t know how to not be a volunteer. I remember Michael and I had to be like 6 years old, drawing up adoption papers in their basement. All we wanted to do was be a part of MagMutts.

2. What is your favorite thing about being a volunteer here?

My favorite thing is honestly seeing my fosters find homes. I love to see the owners of my past foster animals posting updates in the MagMutts Alumni page on Facebook!

3. Why would you recommend someone volunteer in rescue?

It’s a feel-good thing and who doesn’t want to feel good? Fostering is not only good for your emotional, physical, and mental health, it is scientifically proven that spending time with animals helps lower your stress levels. It also is a great way to stay active. It’s about caring and dedicating yourself to a larger purpose.

4. Describe a memorable moment you had while volunteering.

When I had my first momma cat and her 7 babies, all black! I remember ID tagging all of them so I knew who was who, and before I left for work one morning, I put them all in the “foster room” I have. Lo and behold, when I came home from work, I ran upstairs to see the kitties and the door was open. I panicked as my 2 dogs, who I thought would help but they didn’t care cause they were playing with the kittens all day, and I looked all over the house (3 stories) to find the babies and momma. Little did I know, they were all asleep under my bed safe and sound!

5. Are you a cat or dog person?

Neither, I own both! 2 dogs and 2 cats.

6. Do you have a favorite breed?

No, all breeds are unique and beautiful.

7. What kind of work or hobbies do you do outside of rescue?

General Manger of Jersey Mikes, also an elderly care taker.

8. Do you have a favorite food?
